While studies of several of these factors have been undertaken, there are many more variables to be examined; each component found on a conventional chip may behave differently when several threads are competing for its resources. All past studies have been undertaken using simulations of SMT processors, however, the users of the existing simulators are frustrated by slow execution speeds and difficulty of modifications.
